The county of Bedfordshire borders Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. The name originates from an earlier name - Bedanfordscir - which means Beda's ford. This name was recorded as early as the early 11th century. Until 1997 Luton formed part of Bedfordshire but was then made a unitary authority. However for ceremonial purposes, Luton remains part of Bedfordshire.
The highest point within Bedfordshire is situated on Dunstable Downs at some 243 m above sea level.
